The Gulf Stream brings mild winters for the latitude and huge snowfalls when moist sea air meets the mountains — Tromsø ranks among the snowiest cities in the world. Weather shifts fast, especially on the outer sides of Senja and Kvaløya.

The valleys behind the mountains have a continental climate: colder and far more stable than the coast, with clear winter nights. When Tromsø sits under cloud, aurora chasers drive inland toward Bardu, Målselv or the Finnish border.
